How to Celebrate a Risk-free Independence Day
It’s been a weird year so far. The holidays have looked a little different, from Easter to Mother’s Day to Father’s Day and everything in between.
And as much as we wish we could joyfully celebrate the return to normalcy with huge Independence BBQ and pool parties, it looks like that is not in the cards as coronavirus cases spike in our state and next door. Still, it doesn’t mean this holiday weekend is canceled. Read along with us to discover how to make the most of this holiday without the risk.
1. Watch ‘Hamilton’ on June 3rd on Disney Plus
This is a Broadway fan-on-a-budget’s dream. The phenomenon, known as Hamilton, once charged two-thousand dollars per ticket. That is three zeros! The only people who saw this musical in the beginning were celebrities and the wealthy. Since 2015, the musical has become more affordable, even if that meant you had to watch from the nosebleed section with the touring Hamilton cast and crew. For an inexpensive $6.99 per month, you can subscribe to the Disney+ streaming service, and watch the most popular musical of the past decade, front row, with the original Broadway cast. Even if you aren’t a Broadway fan, you may find yourself pleasantly surprised enjoying the film. Lin-Manual Miranda composed this script for seven years incorporating different types of music, with the majority of hip-hop, but also showtunes and pop. It’s not your typical musical and what better way to celebrate America’s Independence than the true story that got us here? Gather your household members around the TV for a special social distancing celebration of the fourth.
2. Find a drive-in fireworks show
Can it truly be the fourth without fireworks? Check your local media where you may find a firework showing viewing via your car. If you live in Acadiana, there will be a drive-in show at St. Julien Park in Broussard, LA at 9 PM. You can enjoy all the sparkle, pomp and circumstance, without compromising on safety.
3. Ditch the parties but fire up the barbies
This may be a given, but especially since rates of infection keep increasing in our area, the riskiest thing right now would be gathering in groups. That doesn’t mean you can’t make the most of it with your household members, though. Throw some hot dogs and hamburgers on the grill, blow up the baby pool or turn on the sprinkler, maybe plan to light some sparklers in the evening. This can still be a great time to make some fun family memories, without extra bodies around.
4. Social distance getaway or staycation
If you’ve been waiting for your chance for a quiet retreat to the beach or cabin, there is no better time than now. Explore Airbnb for private lodging and find a place that won’t be heavily populated. Instead of dining at restaurants or pursuing high traffic sites, discover an adventure hiking in the mountains, fishing, laying on the beach or simply relaxing. If you’d rather stay somewhat local, simply dropping the kids off at their grandparents for a few days can feel like a vacation in itself! No matter what you choose, we wish you and your family a very safe, but memorable holiday. Happy 244th birthday, America!
